Online sales rescue M &S results

A 70% rise in online sales stopped Marks & Spencer's results from looking even gloomier than the reported 5.3% slump in like-for-like sales for the first quarter of 2008.

"M&S Direct had another good quarter with sales from our website up over 70%, reflecting further growth in customer numbers, transactions and conversion," said Chief executive Stuart Rose.
